How to Give Away or Sell Unwanted Items That Are Still Useful
Make room without overlooking an item’s usefulness. Learn what to photograph, describe and agree when giving something away or selling it.
To give away or sell an unwanted item, check its condition, decide whether to offer it free or set a price, take clear photographs and describe any faults. Include measurements and what comes with it, then agree inspection and collection arrangements with the interested person.
That preparation matters whether you are clearing a room, changing your wardrobe or making space for something new. A chair you no longer need may fit someone else’s table. Shelves that do not suit your space may work in another home. The useful question is not simply “How do I get rid of this?” but “What would someone need to know before taking it?”
This guide covers that preparation wherever you live. Baroow Marketplace also has a Free Items category alongside items for sale. Choose your market to find the relevant local listings. Here is how to make your offer clear.
Should you give an item away or sell it?
If you do not need payment, a giveaway may suit you. If you want to sell, choose an asking price and make clear what is included. In both cases, describe the condition honestly and agree how the item will be collected.
Separate “I do not need this” from “this no longer works.” Inspect the item in good light and note wear, missing pieces and anything that does not work as expected. If you cannot check a function, say “not tested.” Do not describe something as working because you assume it probably is.
Check the marketplace’s categories and rules before listing. An item being free does not make it appropriate to pass on. If it is no longer useful, find the relevant disposal or recycling guidance in your area instead.
What photos and measurements should you include?
Show the whole item, then the details someone needs to assess it: the back, the inside, included parts and close-ups of noticeable wear. Photograph the actual item rather than relying on a manufacturer’s image. A catalogue photograph cannot show the scratch on your particular table.
Use good light and avoid filters that change colours or hide marks. Remove personal documents, addresses and other private details from the background. Where a label helps identify the item, photograph the relevant information without exposing personal data.
Measure anything whose size affects whether someone can use or collect it. For furniture, give the width, depth and height with units. For clothing, include the labelled size and useful measurements where appropriate. “Small shelf” is less useful than dimensions someone can compare with their space.
What should a used-item listing say?
A useful listing answers these questions:
- What is the item, and how many are included?
- Is it free, or what is the asking price?
- What is its condition, including faults or missing parts?
- What are its size and relevant specifications?
- What is the general collection area, and what arrangements need agreeing?
If a photograph shows several things but only one is being offered, say which one. For a free item, state plainly that you are not asking for payment for the item. Clarify collection arrangements separately rather than leaving someone to guess what “free” includes.
For example: “Wooden dining chair — free. One chair available, with a scratch on the seat shown in the close-up. Dimensions: [width, depth and height]. Collection from [general area], with a time to be agreed.” This is an example, not a live listing. Replace every placeholder and check every detail before using it.
Avoid promises such as “perfect,” “best bargain” or “will go today” when the facts do not support them. Accurate details give someone a basis for deciding whether the item suits them.
How does Baroow’s Free Items category fit in?
You can offer something useful through Baroow Marketplace’s Free Items category. Check the current listings to see what people are offering.
To list your own item, open Baroow Marketplace, choose “Sell an item”, then select Free Items and follow the instructions. The same form lets you list free items.

What should you agree before collection?
Agree what is being handed over, how it can be inspected, who will collect it and a suitable time. For bulky furniture, discuss dimensions and relevant access details before someone makes the journey. Keep your exact address and other private information out of the public listing; share necessary details privately when arranging the handover.
Baroow does not process payments for Marketplace items. Buyers and sellers agree inspection, exchange and payment arrangements directly. A free item still needs clear handover arrangements even though there is no asking price for the item.
How does passing items on relate to reuse?
Passing on an item that someone can still use is a practical form of reuse. As one local example, Barbados’ Solid Waste Management Programme includes reuse in its waste-management approach. That supports considering another use before disposal; it does not mean every unwanted item should be passed on.
Start with one thing you no longer need. Check its condition, prepare honest photos and decide whether to offer it free or for sale. Open Baroow Marketplace, choose your market and select “Sell an item” to begin. For a giveaway, use Free Items and make the condition and collection details clear.
